One would think that it would be much easier to paint something rather than use oils or stains. That isn't the case. I use a high quality solid MDF manufactured wood as a base during construction of all painted pieces. This wood takes paint very nicely and it is perfectly smooth, allowing for that clean sharp look associated with painting.
After the piece is made and assembled it is again sanded and cleaned and the first primer coat is applied. This coat is sanded and a second primer coat is applied. After a final sanding, two coats of the final color is airbrushed on top of the primer. I use only the highest quality oil based primers and paints available. The results are beautiful. This layered process of four coats of primer and paint gives the piece a nice look and feel. To protect the paint, a light coat of satin lacquer is airbrushed over the final paint coat.
The entire process from start to finish takes about a week. There are a lot of little steps involved to do it right. It is one of those things that taking your time during the wood prep/assembly and letting things dry properly between painting coats, shows in the end product.
