Hello. I hope you find this project fun. I have been getting many emails from customers wanting a couch. I thought
and thought about this and decided to go all out. There is just no way to do a couch without taking into consideration
upholstery. I have made a couch base that will allow for a great deal of individual personal touches. The system I am outlining
below uses one long bottom cushion, but three smaller sections could be made as well. I further experimented with many ways to
cover the piece and I think I have found a very simple way to do it that required no sewing at all.
Materials:
You will need a piece of one inch foam 9 inches by 3 7/8 inches for the bottom and
two 1/2 inch pieces of foam 4 inches by 4 inches for the side pieces. The fabric I used was thin cotton and the pieces are 12
inches by 7 inches for the bottom section. The side sections are 6 inches by 6 inches. Glue and velcro is all you will need to
finish the project.
HINTS: Use pins to secure the fabric to the foam while drying with the glue. Use peel and stick velcro. The thinner the fabric, the
easier it will be to fold over and hold the side curve.
- I want to thank Stephanie Yue in California for sending in the following
pictures of her finished Painted Couch project.
Stephanie ordered a couch un-finished and did some very beautiful custom painting and sewing. It might serve as inspiration to many interested
in creating truly quique pieces. Also note that she did not cover over the sides of the couch and came up with a very nice look...Thank you for sharing Stephanie, and fantastic handiwork!
